The use of Calciment to treat heavy metal containing waste
is described by the EPA as pozzolanic stabilization or fixation.
This process has been specified as the "Best Demonstratable
Available Technology" (BDAT) for treating heavy metal waste
as required by the RCRA Land Disposal Ban. In this process
the alkalinity or pH is adjusted so heavy metals are rendered
insoluble. Cementing reactions which further reduce leachability
as determined by the TCLP test.
Calciment
is used at commercial waste treatment facilities, landfills,
private and Superfund sites where waste fixation is required.
